073: Moving from Captive to Captain of your Business
Show Notes Transcript

Business owners don’t start a business because they love running a business; they start a business because they love providing a specific product or service and want the freedom that comes with being their own boss.

All too quickly, the demands of running a business overwhelm the joy of providing the product or service. This is where many business owners burn out and hit the wall. You can’t make more money or have more time because you’re doing everything yourself, or your customers aren’t being taken care of because your team is non-existent. Or you put off building a team and now you’re scrambling to cobble one together but you don’t have a solid plan because you never really believed your team wouldn’t just be a headache in your business.

Those are the same scenarios I hear over and over again from business owners.

In this episode, you’ll get:

  • The 3 steps you need to take to move from captive to captain of your business
  • Who you might think you’re competing with and who you actually are
  • How you can get time to relax, renew, and refocus on building a business AND a team you will absolutely love
  • The opportunity for a small group intensive experience to transform your business
  • How having the right roadmap can turn confusion into confidence

And you’ll hear the For Love of Team retreat options and why making the investment today will serve you for years to come.

Winston Faircloth:

See you no longer have to be captive to your business or captive to your circumstance. Instead, I want you to be the captain of your destiny by focusing on your existing and your future team with intention and with love. Hey there multipliers it's Winston Faircloth, and welcome back to Episode 73 of the for love of team. This is the podcast where leaders simplify teamwork helping you surround yourself with teammates doing work. They love simplifying your business processes so that you can serve more focused on the work that you love. The past two episodes, we featured my friends Bobby clink, and Katie chase who are sharing their remarkable journey over the past year of building a business and a team that they'd love their surfers mantra not only applies to their clients, it's also a focus of how they treat one another and their team members. So make sure to check out episodes 71 and 72 for this deep dive into their amazing culture. And today, I'm taking you behind the curtain on the design and the development of our upcoming for love of team retreats. Our team has heard so many stories, and we recognize that there are several big challenges today for founders and leaders of businesses. I've got a few stories to share with you. Their names have been changed to protect their privacy. And let me know if any of these stories sound familiar. So Judy, she juggles her time, between full time employment and growing her online retail business. She offers unique etched glassware and other gifts that can be customized for any occasion. She's lined up local suppliers. But every other step in the process falls squarely on her shoulders, whether that's email marketing, website updates, social media sales, bookkeeping, customer service, plus all the fulfillment, including working with her supplier. But then she's responsible for packing and shipping these items. And when I asked Judy about what parts of the business she loves, it came down to a few things. She talked about product design, I just love the design part of this process, being able to create and craft these amazing one of a kind, glassware and gifts. She liked the marketing, very creative in terms of reaching out to different markets, different parts of the country, just loved the whole idea of how to tweak and connect with with clients. And that was really the third thing that she talked about was that she really loves the interaction with the people that clients and she gets inspiration and ideas from talking with their customers. But because of the back office administration, supplier management and fulfillment services, they take priority and they take precedent and they take bandwidth from her. It really drains her joy Judy's joy kind of goes away because he doesn't get to stay in the parts of the business that she really loves. A second story is a person named Patrick Patrick's inbox is overflowing with emails, website requests, direct messages, text begging, begging, begging for pandemic pet training services. Now most of us know that with the COVID stay at home orders so many people were seeking companionship, and many of them began to turn to puppies for companionship and the love that they could not get by seeing people that they they love and admire. But as these little cute puppies past the cute puppy breath stage and began to grow puppy parents began to realize that they needed help and fast. Now you can imagine the chewing the peeing the rambunctiousness the not staying on leashes, just all kinds of issues when puppies kind of grow out of that very cute stage and they begin to get their own personalities and grow and with demand growing through the roof. Balancing in person group and online training services, absolutely maxed out the training team. And meanwhile, all of Patrick's unanswered prospect inquiries lie dormant unresponded to unplaced and these folks are looking for help right now. They don't need help in three or six months. And so these prospects are grown colder by the day. Patrick loves the interaction with his clients love seeing puppies grow and become a valued member of the family. By Patrick is losing money day after day when prospects feel unheard. And then finally the third story is about Stacey Stacey has a well established online marketing business. Last year she exceeded over $800,000 for the second year in a row, despite the economic downturn. Now, this is an amazing business amazing leader, very gifted and on the outside, looking in it, there's a polished exterior, that is professional top notch customer care and client services that seemed to hum along smoothly yet on the inside. The makeup of the team seems to be constantly evolving and changing team members, executive assistance contractors seem to just come and go all the time, Stacy has to augment her staff with expensive consultants to help with specific projects. But when they leave, there's little behind that it would equip Stacy's business team and her business for the long term. And with this turnover, not only do we take a step back, it creates greater complexity and the profit margins begin to erode and decline. And yet Stacy's facing another tough conversation with a team member in the upcoming week. For this amazing rocket fueled growth, this business has just taken off. But now it is taken off because of the focus on an amazing product and great client support. But it won't continue to grow and won't continue to accelerate the way it has in the past. If this culture and the team do not really begin to gel, so Judy doesn't have the money to invest in adding team members. This is her challenge yet she's on the road to burnout by juggling too many tasks, Patrick, he's being pulled between the work he loves, which is serving puppies and their parents and keeping up with growing demand for his services. And then Stacy's company is growing so fast, there was really no time to attend to her internal culture and team costing her precious momentum, and impact in order to put a new foundational internal culture culture underneath an existing and expanding brand. Now whether you're part time founder, existing business owner who feels overloaded with growing demands, or you're an exponential company plateauing with a foundation that's not a stable or as well rounded as you would like, I believe it's focusing on you as the leader, which is the critical first step into turning the situation around. So you no longer have to be captive to your business or captive to your circumstance. Instead, I want you to be the captain of your destiny by focusing on your existing and your future team, with intention and with love. See, I run into too many founders that are captive to their business. I hear these words all the time. They're trapped, unprofitable, overwhelmed, exhausted, they're wearing too many hats. There's no time freedom, unable to grow. They're stuck. They're capped out there handcuffed. I heard one owner say that he has a DIY business to do it yourself business. Well, apparently, medically. If you're running all the positions in the company, remember that you're not competing just against di wires like yourself, you're competing against well baked, well run, fully developed teams. And instead I'd like to invite you to experience these descriptions as the captain of your business, aligned, abundant, wealthy, prosperous, you're in flow, it's profitable. You show your passion about your service and your team, you're able to focus in your own zone of genius. You have freedom of time and money, you're happy, yet driven, and you're fulfilled. Now this contrast between a captain and being kept if sounds wonderful to you, then our four love of chain retreats are for you. Our four love of team retreats are a three night two and a half day, all inclusive and immersive experience for you and just a handful of other leaders.
